2019 Annual Meeting

The Critical Materials Institute annual meeting was held September 9-11, 2019, hosted by Idaho National Laboratory.

One of the key topics of discussion was the increasing role that technology innovation plays in delivering better options for mitigating critical material risks to U.S. supply chains.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, CMI welcomed two senior U.S. government officials as distinguished speakers

  • Senior Policy Advisor at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Steven Fortier

The annual meeting featured keynote addresses:

  • CMI Deputy Director and Colorado School of Mines Professor Roderick Eggert
  • Managing Director of Adamas Market Intelligence Ryan CastillouxCMI annual meeting panel discussion
  • Managing Director Rio Tinto Borax Richard Cohen
  • Rare Element Resources Chief Executive Officer Randy Scott

CMI featured several intra-hub technical plenary presentations:

  • Thermodynamics (Professor Richard Riman, Rutgers University)
  • Li-Ion Battery Disassembly (Tim McIntyre, ORNL)
  • Gap Magnets (David Parker, ORNL).

The CMI annual meeting included two poster presentation sessions with dozens of technical posters from senior researchers, post-doctorate staff, and graduate students, highlighting CMI research in diversifying supply, developing substitutes, reuse & recycling, and crosscutting research.
